Elena's Story: From loneliness to a sense of belonging
A Childhood surrounded by family, yet filled with loneliness
Ever since I was a child, I remember experiencing a deep sense of loneliness, even though I was surrounded by family. We shared everyday moments, such as sitting down to breakfast together, but even when I was with others, I felt alone and misunderstood. From an early age, I struggled with my eating habits and weight. I felt a constant urge to eat that I couldn’t control, and I was frequently criticized because of it. Over time, doctors explained to me that genetic factors played a role, but back then, I didn’t understand what was happening to me.
My mother suffered from several health conditions and spent much of her time in bed, so she was unable to give me the attention I needed. My siblings were rarely home either. All of this caused me deep sadness and intensified my feelings of loneliness.
Losing my father and taking on responsibilities at a young age
When I was thirteen, my father passed away, and my life changed dramatically. I had to start working to help cover household expenses and put food on the table while continuing my education and caring for my mother. My life revolved around work, school, household chores, and looking after her. I had neither the time nor the financial resources to make friends or enjoy activities typical of my age. I wore secondhand clothes, and we ate whatever we could afford. As the years went by, my responsibilities grew, and that feeling of loneliness stayed with me.
The sadness of feeling I had no one to rely on
Although I had one brother and two sisters, I felt I couldn’t count on their support. Whenever my mother needed medical attention, I was the one who took her to appointments and made sure she received her treatments, including her insulin. Sometimes I called my siblings to ask for help, but they would make excuses about work or living too far away. Other times, they wouldn’t even answer my calls. These situations brought me great sadness because I felt that all the responsibility rested on my shoulders. I was so busy taking care of my mother and our home that I barely had opportunities to connect with other people. I felt misunderstood, lost, and deeply alone, despite having a family.
Finding my way to Emotions Anonymous
When I came to Emotions Anonymous, I began to discover a different way of living. As I listened to other members share their experiences, I gradually realized that I wasn’t the only one who had experienced loneliness, sadness, and feelings of being misunderstood. Little by little, by attending meetings and learning about the Twelve-Step recovery program, I began to become part of the group. I found a place where I could share my experiences, listen to others, and begin to feel that I belonged. The loneliness that had followed me since childhood slowly began to fade.
Service and involvement helped me overcome loneliness
One of the experiences that has helped me most in my recovery has been doing service work—volunteering in group activities, giving some of my time to others, and helping the group function. By participating in meetings, listening to fellow members, and taking on responsibilities, I began to feel part of a community. Little by little, I started leaving behind the emotional isolation that had followed me since childhood. Through fellowship and service, I discovered a different way of connecting with others. Today, I can say that the loneliness that had been part of my life for so many years has gradually faded through practicing the Twelve-Step recovery program, doing service work, and becoming an active member of the group.
