Alba’s story: “The rebellion that taught me how to change”

A childhood marked by rejection

Since I was a child, I carried a great deal of resentment toward my mother. I felt irritated hearing her voice, being close to her, or receiving instructions from her. I did not want to help with household chores because all I wanted was to play, watch television, and eat sweets. Many times, I obeyed only out of fear of punishment or physical discipline. Inside me, anger and frustration grew every time she asked me to do something. I also rejected the way we related to each other. I felt she was always upset, and her words often sounded harsh. Little by little, I developed a constant attitude of resistance, doing the opposite of what was expected of me. That rebelliousness slowly became a way of life.

The anger that shaped my attitude

For many years, I argued about everything: the food, the secondhand clothes, the old furniture, the responsibilities at home, and the differences I noticed between my siblings and me. I carried deep bitterness because I believed they received more attention and better things. I remember how painful it felt not to receive what I wished for during special occasions. While other children received gifts, all I saw were financial limitations. Instead of understanding the situation, I allowed even more resentment to grow inside me. I lived in constant dissatisfaction, comparing myself to others and reacting defiantly to every instruction. Without realizing it, that resentment turned into hatred, isolation, and sadness.

The loneliness behind my rebellion

Over time, my behavior also affected my school and work life. I felt ashamed of my appearance and avoided socializing with other people. I had no close friends because I was always upset and emotionally distant. I preferred ignoring anyone who tried to get close to me. At home, there was no real communication either. I would walk away while my family was speaking, avoid advice or correction, and isolate myself from everyone. I believed no one had the right to tell me how to live, especially after I started working and supporting myself financially. My personality became aggressive, prideful, and rude. I disrespected many people, especially my mother. Even toward the end of her life, I continued responding to her harshly. Today, I recognize how much harm I caused through my words, my behavior, and my reactions.

The recovery program taught me a new way to live

I arrived at the recovery program feeling empty, exhausted, and deeply alone. I could no longer stand my own way of being. As I began listening to the meetings, something inside me slowly started to change. For the first time in my life, I was able to connect with other people without feeling rejection. I learned how to listen, pay attention, and follow suggestions without arguing or questioning everything. I discovered that I needed help because I had never been able to change on my own. Little by little, I understood that my suffering did not come only from what I had lived through, but also from my own reactions. The recovery program helped me recognize my defects, soften my character, and begin treating others with respect. I started smiling again and learning how to relate to people in a healthier way.

From bitterness to recovery

Today, I understand that rebellion led me into isolation, emotional emptiness, and hurting the people closest to me. For a long time, I lived filled with resentment, believing everyone else was the problem. Through the recovery program, I realized that I can transform my thoughts, emotions, and daily reactions through daily practice and personal growth. I learned that I need support, guidance, and healthy fellowship in order to continue changing. One day at a time, I continue working on myself, leaving bitterness behind and learning to live with greater serenity, humility, and hope.
